Sikh boy commits suicide after getting disqualified from appearing in examinations due to short attendance

NEW DELHI, India—On March 1, a Sikh boy named Jaspreet Singh (21) committed suicide after being stopped from appearing in the examination due to short attendance. Jaspreet Singh was a student of BA (Economics) final year in the Malabar Christian College, Kozhikode (Kerala).

Available information reveals that the Malabar Christian College authorities disqualified Jaspreet Singh from appearing in examination as he didn’t fulfill the condition of 75% attendance in classes. His attendance was 7% short of the required attendance.

On March 2, her mother had found him hanging with the fan in his room at their residence near Court complex.

Interacting with media, Jaspreet’s sister Balvinder Kaur informed that they had gone to Punjab last month for performing the last rites of their grandfather due to which they got stuck in Delhi during the recent violence incidents. “We couldn’t come back due to cancellation of trains and we informed the College authorities but still Jaspreet lost attendance for a week as the authorities refused to accept the explanation,” she said while adding that Jaspreet got seriously depressed when he learnt that he is going to lose one academic year, pushing him to take his own life.

“Jaspreet Singh was very good in studies. He was actively involved in the National Cadet Corps (NCC) and wanted to be an IPS officer,” she said.

“Jaspreet’s class incharge used to taunt on Punjabis that the Punjabis should study only in Punjab,” she alleged.
