Indian government announces to release eight political Sikh prisoners; Bhai Rajoana’s death sentence to be commuted to life sentence

NEW DELHI, India—The BJP led Union government of India has announced to release eight political Sikh prisoners on the eve of the 550th birth anniversary of Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji. Beside it, the death sentence of living Sikh martyr Bhai Balwant Singh Rajoana will also be commuted to a life sentence.

Interacting with media, a spokesperson of the Union Home Ministry said that the central government has taken a decision to grant special dispensation to nine Sikh prisoners from various jails in the country.

“In one case, a decision has been taken to commute the death sentence to life imprisonment, and in the remaining eight cases, the decision has been taken for the premature release of prisoners serving life and other sentences, through special remission,” he added.

Meanwhile, it is also learnt that a communication to this effect has been sent to the state governments and union territories concerned for the release of the Sikh prisoners.
