Investigation Report of Justice Gurnam Singh Commission on Saka Nakodar Becomes Public

CHANDIGARH, Punjab—The investigation report of Justice Gurnam Singh Commission about the Saka Nakodar, which was tabled in the Punjab assembly by the Parkash Badal led Punjab government in 2001, has finally become public.

Four Sikh youths namely Bhai Ravinder Singh, Bhai Harminder Singh, Bhai Baldhir Singh and Bhai Jhilman Singh had attained martyrdom on February 4, 1986 while staging protest against sacrilege of five saroops of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji. The Punjab police had opened fire on them when they were staging a peaceful protest in Nakodar.

The SAD government spearheaded by Surjit Singh Barnala had appointed the Justice Gurnam Singh led Investigation Commission in 1986. The Commission had submitted its report in 1987 which was tabled in the Punjab assembly on March 5, 2001 by the Parkash Badal led Punjab government.

It is pertinent to note here that there was a widespread perception among the Sikh community that the successive Punjab governments didn’t ever table this report in the Punjab assembly.

On February 13, when HS Phoolka demanded tabling of this report in the Punjab assembly then the assembly speaker KPS Rana informed him that the report was tabled by the SAD led Punjab government on March 5, 2001.

After getting apprised of the fact, HS Phoolka demanded tabling of the Action Taken Report (ATR) on this investigation report of the Justice Gurnam Singh Commission.
