Gurbani Word Of The Day: janak Raaj

ਜਨਕ ਰਾਜੁ (janak raaj)

Meaning: noun: Janak-raj, literally the rule akin to the rule of Raja Janak, an ideal king who was the father of Sita, the wife of Lord Ram; the rule of wisdom.

Quote:

janak raaj bar-taa-iaa sat-jug aaleeṇaa.
(Guru Arjun) has established the rule of Janak or wisdom, as if the satiyug has merged in the kaliyug. -Bhatt Kalya, Guru Granth Sahib, 1407

Message: Raja Janak is known to be a model of wisdom, self-realisation, morality, detachment and humility. His court consisted of many scholars and sages of his time. Through his pure and righteous conduct, he is said to have attained higher knowledge. However, in the true sense, Janak, also meaning knowledgeable and wise, is the one who has internally realised the Divine, and has thus steadied his mind. Such a person makes divine virtues part of one’s conduct and thus his or her heart is always overflowing with piety and bliss.

This was the rule or the state of enlightenment which Guru Arjun Sahib established in the minds of the seekers. Being seekers of spirituality, we should also be enthusiastic about the founding of such a rule, internally and externally, by adopting and spreading the wisdom of Gurbani.

Etymology: Combination of janak (an ideal king of the ancient period) + raaj (rule).
