Giani Harpreet Singh Directs SGPC to Gather Credentials of Families of Sikh Martyrs

CHANDIGARH, Punjab—In a surprising move on November 26, the SGPC appointed acting Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Harpreet Singh directed the apex Sikh body Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhik Committee to gather detailed information about the prevailing conditions of the families of current Sikh struggle’s martyrs, the victims of the 1984 Sikh genocide and Dharmi Faujis (those who left the Army in protest against Operation Bluestar in June-1984). The SGPC has been instructed to do so for offering help to the victim families.

The upcoming parliamentary elections are being considered as the reason behind the sudden inclination of SAD (Badal) backed SGPC towards victims of the current Sikh struggle. Till date, the Shiromani Akali Dal (Badal) owing dominance over SGPC has been dubbing the Sikh freedom fighters as “terrorists”.

It is being speculated that the SAD (Badal) is trying to woo Sikh vote bank as its distraction of from Panthik agenda had made it fall at the bottom during the last Punjab assembly polls.

Beside it, Giani Harpreet Singh also directed the SGPC for boosting efforts to ensure the release of Bhai Balwant Singh Rajoana, who is on death row for the assassination of former Chief Minister Beant Singh on August 31, 1995. He has directed the SGPC to approach the President of India for concluding its mercy petition seeking commutation of Bhai Rajoana’s death penalty to life imprisonment.
