Death Penalty for One Genocide Culprit, Life Imprisonment for Another

NEW DELHI, India—Yashpal “Singh”, one of the two genocide culprits involved in murdering innocent Sikhs during the 1984 Sikh genocide, was today addressed death sentence by a Delhi based Court of additional session judge Ajay Pandey. However, another culprit Naresh Sherawat has been imprisoned for life till death.

The Court addressed its verdict in Tihar Jail keeping in view the public outrage against the guilty culprits. Notably, the Delhi legislator Manjinder Singh Sirsa had slapped Yashpal “Singh” during the last hearing in Patiala House Court on November 15.

It may be recalled here that the Court had held duo culprits guilty of murdering two innocent Sikhs namely Hardev Singh and Avtar Singh in Mahipalpur area of south Delhi during the 1984 Sikh genocide on November 14. After conducting debate on the quantum of punishment on November 15, the Court had reserved its verdict for November 20.

This is the first conviction in five of the eight cases — reopened and investigated by the Special Investigation Team (SIT), which was constituted in 2015 — in which charge sheets were filed. Investigation into the other three cases in which Congress leader Sajjan Kumar is involved, are still pending.

The case pertains to the brutal murder of two innocent Sikhs namely Hardev Singh and Avtar Singh in Mahipalpur area of south Delhi during the 1984 Sikh genocide. Court records reveal that a mob of fanatic Hindus comprising 500 people, including the two accused, murdered innocent Sikhs, burnt shops and looted people in the area.

Meanwhile, the Akali politicians have warmly welcomed the Court’s verdict by terming the development as a victory of the truth. Interestingly, the Congress spokesperson Abhishek Singhvi and Congress affiliated Punjab CM Captain Amarinder Singh have also welcomed the Court’s verdict despite the fact the Congress had orchestrated the 1984 Sikh genocide.
