Why forget from the mind the Divine, who has all treasures, all rewards and all virtues within Him, and by remembering whom all sufferings depart. -Guru Arjun Sahib, Guru Granth Sahib, 218

Message: The quote above emphasises that we should not forget the Divine who is the possessor of all the treasures. The treasures here also include spiritual qualities, though most of us pray for worldly possessions only.

If we read the verse with attention, the goal here is to acquire treasures and rewards that alleviate our suffering. If our objective in life is to acquire more and more worldly possessions or higher and higher status only, that cannot alleviate our suffering. Happiness after achieving a material goal – be it more money or higher status – is temporary, but a spiritual quality like ‘contentment’ leads to inner satisfaction and gratitude for what we have.

When we forget the Divine, we tend to chase the worldly goods and the craving for more, never comes to an end. It is the craving or lack of contentment that causes the suffering

Etymology: Combination of sarab (all) + guṇaa (virtues) modification of Sanskrit guṇ (speciality, merit, quality, good quality, constituent part, nature) → Pali → Prakrit → Punjabi and others.
