CHANDIGARH, Punjab—The Punjab and Haryana High Court is set to hear the case regarding action against two more Punjab police cops in connection with the findings of the Justice Ranjit Singh Commission into the Kotkapura firing incidents that claimed lives of two Sikhs who were peacefully protesting against sacrilege of Guru Granth Sahib in Bargari.
These two cops, namely Bikram Jit Singh and Pardeep Singh were named in the Justice Ranjit Singh Commission report. Stay orders were issued by Justice RK Jain as he issued a notice to the Punjab government to lodge a reply before October 11.
The court will also hear against the petition filed against former Moga SSP Charanjit Sharma, former Mansa SSP Raghbir Singh and SHO (Bajakhana) Amarjit Singh Kaler. The High Court had earlier stayed any action against these policemen on September 13.
These policemen have claimed that they were shot at by the protestors although the Justice Ranjit Singh Commission Reports states that the protesters were entirely peaceful during the protest. These policemen have further stated that Justice Ranjit Singh Commission did not allow them to lodge their response before submitting its findings.
On October 14, 2015, Punjab police shot at peacefully protesting Sikhs at village Vaibhal Kalan near Kotkapura. Two Sikhs, Bhai Gurjeet Singh, and Bhai Krishan Bhagwan Singh were announced dead due to firing by the police. In it’s FIR, Punjab Police refused to name guilty police officers.
Sikhs had gathered at the site to protest against police’s inaction in locating a stolen corpus of Guru Granth Sahib. Water cannons and other means were used to disperse the protesters.
