2017 Assembly Polls: A Week After Apna Punjab Party’s Launch, Chhotepur Front Lacks Momentum

CHANDIGARH, Punjab—After being launched in Chandigarh on October 1, the Apna Punjab Party (APP) has failed to gain much momentum.  The party was launched as Punjab’s forth front by former Aam Aadmi Party’s state convener, Sucha Singh Chhotepur who was sacked for allegedly taking bribe from party volunteers.

On October 1, Chhotepur had announced to field candidates from 117 assembly constituencies in the upcoming assembly polls of 2017.  He raised speculation over other senior AAP volunteers joining him in the crusade to not only defeat Akali Dal in Punjab, but also get rid of Kejriwal’s influence in the state.  However, after a week, the party has barely made any progress except for launching a few social media accounts.  So far, Aam Aadmi Party has yet to suffer from the “Chhotepur jolt”.

There has also been no progress of joining hands with Navjot Sidhu’s Awaz-e-Punjab as the latter is still trying to build an alliance with either the Congress or the AAP.

Speaking with Sikh24, Chhottepur said that names of presidents of 20 districts have been announced already.  “We have also announced incharges of Women’s wing, Legal wing, Intellectual Wing, Cultural Wing and a Media wing.  Our party will have a manifesto committee which will be led by R.R. Bhardwaj.  Mr. Hardeep Singh Kingra will be the official state spokesperson,” Chhotepur said.

Chhotepur claimed that over 2,000 workers from the Aam Aadmi Party have already resigned.  He claimed that in future, many more will be joining APP as they resign from AAP.

Chhotepur was in Chandigarh earlier today and held a press conference.  He spoke about forming a ‘Punjab Progressive Alliance’ (PPA) which would benefit from leaders like Dharamvira Gandhi and Harinder Singh Khalsa.

Chhotepur claimed that his party would truly work as per democratic principles and every activist of the party on ground level will be given a free hand to work.

Ruling out the possibility of an alliance with the Shiromani Akali Dal, BJP, Congress or AAP, Chhotepur said that the main agenda will be to defeat all three in the upcoming elections.  Chhotepur said that the Shiromani Akali Dal is being run as a ‘Badal & Company’.  He further alleged that Punjab was moving towards bankruptcy while the Badals were progressing financially at a faster rate.
