The human body is like a furnace and the mind a piece of iron within it; the five fires are burning it. – Guru Nanak Sahib, Guru Granth Sahib, 990

Message:This verse illustrates the horrifying state of the human body with a metaphor. Our body is a furnace and the mind, a piece of iron, which is being burnt by five fires (of lust, anger, greed, worldly attachment, and arrogance). The coals of our wrongdoings and misdeeds constantly fuel these fires

As such, the mind gripped by weakness is never stable. Thus it slowly burns. If one continuously remains trapped by the vices and does not overcome them, virtues will never prevail.

How can the mind be saved from this burning? Again, eliminate the five negative forces through good company and Gurbani. Slowly the mind will develop better self-control, stop wavering and become stable (the piece of iron will transform into gold). Spiritual bliss will ensue.
