Gurbani Word Of The Day: paṛeeai

ਪੜੀਐ (paṛeeai)
Meaning: verb: To read, study, learn.

Quote:
ਮਨ ਸਮਝਾਵਨ ਕਾਰਨੇ   ਕਛੂਅਕ ਪੜੀਐ ਗਿਆਨ॥
man samjhaavan kaarne   kachhoo-ak paṛeeai giaan.
To instruct the mind, one ought to study some wisdom. – Bhagat Kabeer, Guru Granth Sahib, Page 340

Message: The more we read, the more we can improve in our vocabulary, comprehension, knowledge and generate new ideas, whilst keeping the mind engaged positively. Learning new skills and ideas will bring about personal creativity. With creativity, we can expand our understanding and improve our constructive problem solving skills in a wide range of fields.

A good example is the reading of the daily news that gives an insight into the world around and its happenings. It educates us to be watchful for crime, look at governments’ efforts to help people and also helps us in understanding our neighbour’s problems which are also our own.

A good reader is never bored nor feels lonely but instead experiences a richer and rewarding life. At the opposite spectrum is a non-reader who never grows and infact, lets the mind become a devil’s workshop. He becomes trapped in his own ignorance.

We need to find ways to acquire knowledge. We must embark on a journey to transform ourselves and take up this powerful habit of reading and also encourage others too.

Education is the most powerful weapon we can use to change the world.  – Nelson Mandela, 1918 – 2013

Etymology: From Sanskrit paṭhati (reads, repeats aloud) → Pali paṭhati (reads) → Prakrit paḍhai (reads) → Sindhi paṛhanu →Lahndi paṛhan →Punjabi paṛhnaa (to read, to study).
