Word Of The Day : vaḍe

ਵਡੇ (vaḍe)
Meaning: adjective: Big, great.

Quote:
ਨਾਨਕ ਵਡੇ ਸੇ ਵਡਭਾਗੀ   ਜਿਨੀ ਸਚੁ ਰਖਿਆ ਉਰ ਧਾਰਿ॥
naanak vaḍe se vaḍ-bhaagee   jinee sach rakhiaa ur dhaar.
Nanak! Great and very fortunate are they who keep Truth enshrined in their hearts.- Guru Nanak Sahib, Guru Granth Sahib, Page 942

Message: Frequently humans equate greatness with the amount of wealth and power they possess and the position they hold in society. There are those too who consider themselves great by the number of ritual practices they perform.

Gurbani however asserts that only by being attuned to Truth – true wisdom and true conduct – can we attain true understanding and thus practise a true way of life.

By treading on the path of truth we are spiritually elevated. This is what brings spiritual improvement and gives us a truly exalted position.

Etymology: From Sanskrit vaḍra (big) → Prakrit vaḍḍ (big) → Sindhi vaḍo, Lahndi/Punjabi vaḍḍaa (big).
