Aurangzeb Road in New Delhi To Be Renamed After Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam

NEW DELHI—Accepting the resolution passed by the New Delhi Municipal Council, the Delhi government has changed the name of Aurangzeb Road to Abdul Kalam Road.  The council announced that the Central Government has been taken into confidence.

Earlier, Sikh organizations had requested that the road name be changed to Guru Tegh Bahadur Road, considering his sacrifices for the people.  A petition surfaced online and collected over 15,000 signatures in a short period.

There had been demand from long time to change name of this road to Guru Teg Bahadur Road, but the municipality named it after Abdul Kalam who passed away a month ago while addressing a gathering in IIM. Abdul Kalam was an Indian scientist renowned as ‘Missile Man’.

It is notable that Aurungzeb was a cruel Mughal emperor who was firm to massacre Hindu community in India, but he was challenged by the ninth Sikh prophet Guru Teg Bahadur Ji. Guru Teg Bahadur Ji was later named as ‘Hind di Chadar’ by hindu community in India.
