Court Forbids Police to Shackle Bhai Jagtar Singh Hawara During His Court Appearances

Jagtar Singh HawaraNEW DELHI, India—A local court has directed Delhi Police not to shackle Sikh political prisoner Bhai Jagtar Singh Hawara during his court appearances in Delhi.

On Monday, Bhai Hawara was again brought fully shackled during his appearance in court of Ritesh Kumar in a case registered against him by the police in Alipur police station under section 120 B and 307. Advocate Maninder Singh presented himself as legal counsel of Bhai Hawara.

After hearing argument of Advocate Maninder Singh, concerned judge asked the Police to remove shackles of Bhai Hawara realizing it as inhuman practice. Now, the Sikh freedom fighter will be presented only with handcuffs as per the court direction. However, the order will be applicable only in Delhi and the police have been allowed to shackle Bhai Hawara outside Delhi for court appearances. Next hearing of the case will be held on April 7.

Bhai Hawara is facing life imprisonment in case of assassination of infamous former Punjab chief minister Beant “Singh” who had crossed all limits of violation of human rights in the state during his regime.
