Central Government Deny Request to Release Sikh Detainees

2014-10-19- badal modiNEW DELHI, India—Central Government has denied releasing the political Sikh detainees who have completed their life sentences. It is notable that Chief Minister of Punjab S. Parkash Badal and Deputy Chief Minister S. Sukhbir Badal have urged the Central Government to release the political Sikh prisoners who have completed their life sentences, but are still languishing in different jails of India. Reliable sources informed that both Akali Dal leaders met Home Minister Sri Rajnath Singh about the release of Sikh detainees.

Sri Rajnath Singh said on this that he will check for legal status of the cases. S. Badal has asked Rajnath Singh to release these prisoners as they are on the cusp of old age and one of them has also lost his eyesight.

After the meeting, officials of Home Ministry refused any chance of release of these detainees. The officials later said that discussion can be held about legal advice for specific cases of old aged prisoners and those who have completed 20 years of life imprisonment. But the accused of serious cases don’t possess any chance of release.

One of the officials said that ‘terrorists’ can’t be handled politely. The official said that the Government can never release the assassins of Chief Minister Beant Singh, when the Indian Government has asked the Thailand Government to arrest the main accused of this assassination Jagtar Singh Tara, who was residing in Thailand from October.  It is notable that Jagtar Singh Tara was arrested on 5th January by Thailand Police from the eastern state of Thailand i.e. Chonbury. Jagtar Singh Tara was punished with life imprisonment by the court for his role in the assassination of Former Chief Minister Beant Singh and 17 others in a bomb blast at Secretariat, Chandigarh. Jagtar Singh Tara had been on run since 2004 by digging a tunnel in Burail Jail, Chandigarh.
