Shiromani Akali Dal to Commence Expedition Against Drugs in Punjab

CHANDIGARH, Punjab—Expressing displeasure over the anti-drug campaign to be initiated by BJP on 12 January from Amritsar, Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) has announced to commence an anti-drug campaign on 5th January.  Talking about the drug smuggling through the India-Pakistan Border, President of Shiromani Akali Dal and Deputy Chief Minister S. Sukhbir Badal blamed the Border Security Force. The latter announced to organize a protest against the drug smuggling in Attari, Fazilka, Hussainiwala and Gurdaspur. He said that these protests will make aware the Border Security Forces about the drug smuggling going on in their presence.

Sukhbir Badal said that defending the border is the duty of Border Security Forces and Punjab Government don’t have any control over it. He said that not only Punjab, but the whole of India is victim to the drug smuggling from Pakistan.  He said that nobody has the right to blame Shiromani Akali Dal for taking political advantage of this sensitive issue.  He clarified that not even a gram of drugs is produced in Punjab, all the drugs are either imported from Pakistan or Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh. He said that to make Punjab drug free, both of these sources of drugs need to be banned.

According to the available information, state President of BJP Sri Amit Shah has planned to initiate the expedition against drugs from former Member of Parliament of Amritsar Navjot Singh Sidhu. It is also believed that Navjot Singh Sidhu is going to play a political stunt against Akali Dal under this expedition. Keeping these activities of BJP in view, Shiromani Akali Dal has planned to commence a campaign against drugs, blaming Border Security Forces and BJP Governments of Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh for it.
