CHANDIGARH, Punjab—The apex Sikh body Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhik Committee has appealed the Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Harpreet Singh to get the issue of missing 267 holy saroops investigated by an independent Sikh Judge or any other eminent Sikh personality. Notably, 267 holy saroops of Sri Guru Granth Sahib have been found missing in the SGPC’s publication department.
Interacting with media, SGPC’s president Gobind Singh Longowal said that a rational and reliable probe was necessary for this sensitive issue. “We have also decided to transfer all the employees working in the publication department so that no one could affect the investigation,” he added.
He further said that a sub-committee appointed by him was investigating the issue as per directions by the Akal Takht but now we want Akal Takht to designate this investigation to a rational personality.
It is pertinent to note here that 267 saroops of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji have been found missing from the SGPC’s publication department. The incident came to fore when assistant supervisor Kanwaljit Singh got retired in May this year.
Kanwaljit Singh has claimed that he was forced to issue holy saroops of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji without making entries in the record books. He has also claimed that more than 80 holy saroops got burnt in fire incident occurred at Gurdwara Ramsar Sahib in May-2016 while the SGPC disclosed damage of only 14.
However, the SGPC is accusing Kanwaljit Singh of negligence in his duties, but the SGPC’s accusation comes under suspicion because the latter is ready to let go Kanwaljit Singh just by recovering the cost of missing saroops.
Last month, Amritsar Police Commissioner Sukhchain Singh Gill had marked also an inquiry into this incident to the Deputy Commissioner of Police on the complaint of Kanwaljit Singh.
