Sikhs stage protest against demolition of Mangu Mutt in Bhubaneshwar (Orissa)

BHUBANESHWAR, Orissa—Scores of Sikhs, including two Punjab legislators Simarjit Singh Bains and Balwinder Singh Bains, today staged a protest in Bhubaneswar against demolition of the historic Mangu Mutt in Jagannath Puri.

The protesters were carrying placards and banners against the demolition of Magu Mutt where Guru Nanak Sahib had uttered Aarti.

The protesters marched from marched from Kharavela Nagar Gurdwara to Master Canteen square.

It is pertinent to note here that the Orissa government has destroyed the historic Mangu Mutt despite giving repeated assurances to Sikhs. The Mangu Mutt has been demolished to develop a heritage corridor around the 12th century shrine in the seaside pilgrim town.

Around two months ago Punjab CM Amarinder Singh had appealed to his Orissa counterpart Naveen Patnaik to not raze the religious institution associated with Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji.

Meanwhile, it is learnt that the Bains brothers tried to get an appointment from Orissa CM Naveen Patnaik to discuss the matter but they couldn’t get it.

“Orissa CM needs to visit Punjab to how beatification can be done without demolishing temples and structures of religious importance,” said Bains brothers.
