1984 Sikh massacre would have been averted, had IK Gujral’s advice been heeded, says Dr. Manmohan Singh

NEW DELHI, India—Speaking at a function organized to mark the 100th birth anniversary of former Indian Prime Minister Inder Kumar Gujral in New Delhi on December 4, the former Indian PM Dr. Manmohan Singh said that the massacre of Sikhs in November 1984 could have been avoided if the then Home Minister Narsimha Rao had followed the advice of Inder Kumar Gujral.

“Gujral Ji was so concerned that he went to the then Home Minister Narsimha Rao that very evening  and advised Rao that the situation was so grave that it is necessary for the government to call the army at the earliest,” said Manmohan Singh while adding that the 1984 massacre could have been avoided if Rao had heeded the Gujral’s advise.
