Sajjan Kumar seeks bail on medical ground; Supreme Court asks AIIMS to setup medical board

NEW DELHI, India—Congress leader Sajjan Kumar, who is serving a life sentence in a case pertaining to the 1984 Sikh genocide, has sought bail on medical grounds. Through his legal counsel Vikas Singh, Sajjan Kumar has submitted before the Supreme Court that Sajjan Kumar’s health was not good and his weight is losing day by day.

It has been claimed before the Supreme Court that Sajjan Kumar’s weight has reduced by 10 Kg during the last 11 months.

On November 6, the Supreme Court bench headed by Justice SA Bobde asked the AIIMS director to constitute a medical board to check health conditions of Sajjan Kumar and submit the board’s report in four weeks.

“Just losing weight doesn’t mean illnesses… You want to be examined? We will order that. We are taking care of your health. What more do you want? Wherever you are, you should be healthy,” the Bench said while directing AIIMS to set up a medical board for the purpose.

Meanwhile, it is learnt that Sajjan Kumar will continue to be in jail as the Bench adjourned the hearing to next year during summer vacation.

It may be recalled here that Sajjan Kumar was imprisoned for life by the Delhi High Court on December 17 in a case pertaining to brutal killing of five members of a Sikh family in the Raj Nagar of Delhi’s cantonment area on November 1, 1984.
