Controversy on Rajiv Gandhi Brings Akalis and Congressmen Face to Face in Punjab

CHANDIGARH, Punjab—Misunderstanding of an information shared by the Delhi based AAP legislator Jarnail Singh has brought the Akalis and Congressmen face to face in Punjab. Notably, AAP legislator Jarnail Singh had demanded revocation of the Bharat Ratna award from the former Indian PM Rajiv while sharing the details about the passing of a resolution by the Delhi state assembly on 1984 Sikh genocide.

However, his statement was mistaken as the Delhi state assembly sought revocation of the Bharat Ratna award from Rajiv Gandhi due to which the Delhi assembly’s speaker had to clarify that this demand was not in the resolution.

On December 25, Ludhiana based two Akali leaders namely Gurdeep Singh Gosha and Meetpal Singh Dugri blackened the face and reddened the hands Rajiv Gandhi’s statue installed in the Salem Tabri area of Ludhiana. After getting intimated of the incident, a Congress leader Gursimran “Singh” Mand reached on the spot and started cleaning the Rajiv Gandhi’s statue with his turban. Later, Ravneet Bittu also went there and washed the statue with milk.

A sharp outrage erupted among the Sikh masses as soon as the visuals of Mand’s embarrassing act gone viral over social media.

Immediately after this, the Ludhiana police registered a case under Section 153-A of the IPC, Section 68 of the IT Act and Section 3 of the Punjab Property Defacement Act against the duo Akali leaders on the statement of Gagandeep Singh, zonal junior engineer, Municipal Corporation.

The duo Akali leaders are in the custody of Police as Gurdeep Singh Gosha was arrested on the same while Meetpal Singh Dugri surrendered before the Court on December 26.
