Punjab Government Begins Process to Release 18 Political Sikh Prisoners; Orders Release of Bhai Dilbag Singh

CHANDIGARH, Punjab—In an attempt to reach on a constructive deal with the Sarbat Khalsa appointed Jathedars to get Bargari agitation concluded, the Congress led Punjab government has initiated process to release political Sikh prisoners. It is learnt that the Punjab government has considered cases of 18 political Sikh prisoners who are languishing in jails of Punjab, Chandigarh, Delhi and Rajasthan.

Sources have informed that the Punjab CM Captain Amarinder Singh issued orders on December 7 to release political Sikh prisoner Bhai Dilbag Singh alias Bagaa who has been languishing in the Nabha jail for the last 23 years.

On being contacted by media, Advocate Jaspal Singh Manjhpur informed that Bhai Dilbag Singh was arrested in a murder case in May-1992 and was addressed life sentence by the Court on February 23, 2007.  “Beside it, Bhai Dilbag Singh was also addressed five year sentence by a TADA court” he added.

Manjhpur further informed that the Punjab government has ordered the release of Bhai Dilbag Singh Bagaa against a bond of Rupees 30,000/- using its powers available under section 432 of Cr.P.C (Code of Criminal Procedure).

Meanwhile, the Punjab Jail minister Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa has informed that the Punjab government has approached the Union government seeking release of political Sikh prisoners languishing in the jails of other states.
