If one sows in the salt barren soil, how can one earn a profit? -Guru Nanak Sahib, Guru Granth Sahib, 419

Message: Where are you planting farmer?
Concentrated salt is toxic to most crops. Plants do not grow well in soils that contain salts. Salt reduces the capacity of plant roots to take up water from the soil.

A life filled with laziness, falsehood, conceit, etc. is akin to the salty barren soil. These negativities weaken our inner true potential and powers. We cannot get a good harvest or attain our goals if we plant our seeds of labour in the wrong place or stay in the wrong company.

By turning to the Guru for guidance and heeding his message, we are able to treat our ‘salt barren’ hearts and minds. Thus, with virtuous and honest thoughts, we can transform our company of friends or avoid those environments and people who are not conducive to our growth.

Etymology: From Sanskrit kallar → Punjabi kallar (salt barren soil).
