Gurbani Word Of The Day: chaatrik

ਚਾਤ੍ਰਿਕ (chaatrik)

Meaning: noun: The pied cuckoo (supposed to be living only on raindrops).

Quote:

baarik kau jaise kheer baalhaa chaatrik mukh jaise jal-dharaa.
As milk is dear to the baby and the raindrop is dear to the mouth of the rainbird (so is the Divine dear to my mind). -Bhagat Namdev, Guru Granth Sahib, 693

Message: It is believed that the chatrik longs for a special drop of rainwater known as swanti boond, which is rare to find. The chatrik looks towards the clouds and repeatedly cries for the drop. Even when the surroundings flourish with greenery and ponds overflow with water, it does not rest until that single drop of rain falls into its mouth. Similarly, the infant is satisfied with milk only.

By the same token, the soul or spirit gets real gratification and satisfaction from the loving remembrance and memory of the presence of the Divine only.

Etymology: A vernacular form of Sanskrit chaatak.
