One, who has eradicated evil from one’s mind, looks upon or considers the whole creation as his or her friend. -Guru Arjan Sahib, Guru Granth Sahib, 266

Message: If we try to fight hatred with hatred, there is no real winner. So we need to counter closed-mindedness with open-mindedness, even if it will have a negative outcome for ourselves. We need to counter hatred and rejection by promoting love and acceptance.

To achieve harmony, the only thing standing in the way is our egoistic mind. By having the ability to control our ego, we are able to spread the love. Only then can we answer a rude question with polite language. We should not see situations as a zero-sum game of winning and losing. We can accept and respect others as we want ourselves to be acknowledged and validated.

Etymology: Modified from Sanskrit sajjan, blend of sant + jan (good human) → Pali sajjan → Prakrit sajjaṇ → Sindhi sajaṇu (a benevolent person, friend), Lahndi/Punjabi sajjaṇ (friend) and Hindi saajan (lover).
