MANTECA, California—18-year-old Tyrone McAllister flipped off our camera and smiled, then made what appeared to be a gang sign gesture while at his arraignment. The Union City Police Chief’s son is charged with elder abuse, attempted robbery and assault with a deadly weapon. A 16-year-old has also been named as a suspect but his identity will not be released because he is a minor.

Investigators with the Manteca Police Department believe McAllister is the man in black hooded sweatshirt who was seen on surveillance footage captured Monday morning at Greystone Park in Manteca. The man is seen repeatedly kicking then spitting on 71-year-old Sikh Grandpa, Sahib Singh Natt. Natt’s family says he is doing well considering the attack but is now too afraid to go on his morning walks near the park. The family believes the beating is a hate crime. Gray Singh spoke on behalf of loved ones, “The Sikh community it has hit them hard but you know I would say that it’s not just the Sikh community, I think it hit the whole community of Manteca hard,” Singh, who is also a Manteca City Councilman said.

The president of the NAACP Stockton Branch was also in court. Bobby Bivens says he does not want the attack to divide the community, “As to whether it was just a hate crime or a crime, I’m of the opinion that at this point, looking at the videos, that it’s just a crime committed by some young people,” Bivins explained.

The 18-year-old’s father, Union City Police Chief Daryl McAllister has said in a statement, he is estranged from his son and that Tyrone needs to be held accountable for his actions.

McAllister is in custody on no bail. He’s expected back in court on the 17th. He did not enter a plea.

The San Joaquin County District Attorney’s office also asked the judge for a criminal protective order against McAllister that prevents him from contacting Natt and visiting Greystone Park.

    3. Guru Nanak kirpa,
if same crime of brutality done by Sikh against this youth, would the reaction still be honor of police chief vs emotional, mental and physical pain suffered by very senior Sikh?
Instead of acknowledging high crime problem that needs to be dealt with, shocking that such danger to all law abiding in society being looked at as racists?
More shocking is how a well respected police chief son become so hateful if there is much love, values etc in home?
