Gurbani Word Of The Day: chiṛee

ਚਿੜੀ (chiṛee)

Meaning: noun: Sparrow.

Quote:

adh gulhaa chiee kaa chuga   gai chaee bil-laai. khasmai
bhaavai ohaa chaňgee   ji kare khudaai khudaai.

Half a seed is the feed of a sparrow. (After picking her feed) she flies through the sky and chirps in joy. One who remembers the Divine (or is content by His will) is pleasing to the Master and is good. -Guru Nanak Sahib, Guru Granth Sahib, 1286

Message: In contrast to an elephant (in yesterday’s quote), the sparrow is small. The feed of a sparrow is very little. After pecking and feeding, it joyously flies into the sky and chirps away.

A humble and content person is satisfied with what he or she has. Such a person is more pleasing to the Creator than an egoist who boasts about one’s possessions or power and still lacks contentment.

When we lack contentment, we endeavour even harder to amass more wealth during our lives, and hardly ever devote any time to spiritual wealth and development. We hardly have any time for the joyous moments of life on earth. We need to learn from the sparrow that is contented with even a small amount of food.

Etymology: From Sanskrit chiṭak (sparrow) → Pali → Prakrit chiḍig (bird) → Sindhi chiṛo/chiṛee, Lahndi and Punjabi chiṛaa/chiṛee (sparrow).
