Battle for Compensation: Jodhpur Detainees ask Punjab CM to Make Pressure on Union Government

CHANDIGARH—A delegation of Jodhpur detainees on June 23 met the Chief Minister of Punjab Captain Amarinder Singh to ask him to make pressure on the Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh to withdraw plea challenging Amritsar Court’s verdict from Punjab & Haryana High Court. Earlier, the delegation had also met Akali Parliamentarian Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa on June 22 in this concern.

Promising the delegation to make every possible effort to make Union government withdraw plea from the High Court, Captain Amarinder Singh said that the Punjab government has already accepted the Amritsar Court’s verdict to provide its half share of compensation to Jodhpur detainees.

Congress legislator S. Harminder Singh Gill (also a Jodhpur detainee), Bhai Jasvir Singh Ghumman, Bhai Wassan Singh, Bhai Gurcharan Singh and Bhai Tarsem Singh Khela were also present on this occasion.

It may be recalled here that in April last year the District and Sessions Court of Amritsar had directed the Union government of India as well as the State government of Punjab to provide compensation worth Rupees 4,00,000/- (plus interest as per Banking rate) to Jodhpur detainees.
