Battle for Compensation: Jodhpur Detainees meet Akali Parliamentarian Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa

CHANDIGARH—A delegation of Jodhpur detainees headed by S. Jasbir Singh Ghumman met the Shiromani Akali Dal affiliated parliamentarian S. Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa at Chandigarh on June 22. Notably, the issue of compensation to Jodhpur detainees was earlier taken up by the other SAD affiliated Parliamentarians with Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh and he had promised to withdraw the challenging plea from Punjab & Haryana High Court.

Apprising the parliamentarian S. Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa about Rajnath Singh’s promise to withdraw plea challenging Amritsar Court’s verdict in Punjab & Haryana High Court, the delegation told him that if the Union government doesn’t withdraw plea from High Court by July 2 then this case may again get pending for 30 years.

Parliamentarian Dhindsa promised the delegation of Jodhpur detainees that a delegation of SAD parliamentarians will once again take up the matter with Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh and will apprise him about the outrage among Sikhs regarding the Union government’s move challenging Amritsar Court’s verdict in Punjab & Haryana High Court.

It may be recalled here that in April last year the District and Sessions Court of Amritsar had directed the Centre government of India as well as the State government of Punjab to provide compensation worth Rupees 4,00,000/- (plus interest as per Banking rate) to Jodhpur detainees.
