Gurbani Word Of The Day: nagan

ਨਗਨ (nagan)

Meaning: adjective: Naked.

Quote:

nagan phirat raňg ek kai   oh sobhaa paae.
paaṭ paṭaṁbar birthiaa   jih rach lobhaae.
While imbued with the love of the One Divine if one wanders around naked, one still receives respect. Those silk and satin clothes are worthless when one becomes greedier by indulging in them. -Guru Arjan Sahib, Guru Granth Sahib, 745

Message: Spoilt for choice!
A whole wardrobe with an array of fashionable and beautiful clothes, which are rarely worn, making us spoilt for choice, or a few simple clothes hanging in a cupboard for one to use daily.

Which is the more pleasant picture in your mind? Which one gives you an idea of calm contentment and comfort?

The Guru contrasts a state of mind in which a person is content and happy than the one who, even after having expensive and abundant dresses with an overflowing wardrobe, is still unhappy and dissatisfied.

Etymology: From Sanskrit nagn (naked) that evolved to Sindhi naṅgu and Punjabi naṅgaa.
