Gurbani Word Of The Day: baajaar

ਬਾਜਾਰ (baajaar)

Meaning: noun: Bazaar, market.

Quote:
ਰਾਜੇ ਰਯਤਿ ਸਿਕਦਾਰ   ਕੋਇ ਨ ਰਹਸੀਓ॥
ਹਟ ਪਟਣ ਬਾਜਾਰ   ਹੁਕਮੀ ਢਹਸੀਓ॥
raaje ray’at sikdaar   koi na rahseeo.
haṭ paṭaṇ baajaar   hukam-ee ḍhahseeo.

The kings, the subjects, and the leaders, no one will remain forever. The shops, the cities and the bazaars, all will disintegrate by the will of the Divine. -Guru Ram Das Sahib, Guru Granth Sahib, 141

Message: We behave as if we are permanent. We never realise that the beautiful possessions and properties we crave and strive so much to own would be left behind one day.

The beautiful gardens, lands, houses, beds, cars, and mansions, which people think are their own, never go with any of them. Neither kings nor their subjects or possessions last forever.

It is only the Divine who is eternal. To attain perpetual happiness we must grow love and attachment to the eternal. While enjoying the material gifts, we recognise and thank the power working behind all these bounties.

Be grateful to the Giver. The Giver constantly reveals itself through the wonderful creation and the gifts we enjoy in abundance in everyday life. We only need to open our eyes, and see Him there!

Etymology: From Turkish/Persian baazaar (market, selling miscellaneous goods in a Middle Eastern country). Comparable to Italian bazarro.
