Bhai Tara’s Statement Recorded by Court in Beant Assassination Case

CHANDIGARH, Punjab—Court hearing on the trial against political Sikh prisoner Bhai Jagtar Singh Tara in Beant “Singh” assassination case was conducted by the Special Court of Additional Session Judge J.S. Sidhu in Burail Jail on October 23.

Bhai Tara’s legal counsel Advocate Simranjit Singh informed that the CBI lawyer put 50 questions to Bhai Jagtar Singh Tara and his answers were recorded by the Court. He further informed that the Court has deferred next hearing in the case onto November 13.

Notably, hearing of all cases against Bhai Jagtar Singh Tara is conducted within jail premises due to imposition of a special section of Code of Criminal Procedure.

The trial against Bhai Jagtar Singh Tara was pending in Beant assassination case as he had succeeded in fleeing to Pakistan after Burail jail break episode in January 2005. His companions Bhai Jagtar Singh Hawara and Bhai Paramjit Singh Bheora were again arrested and addressed death sentence in this case in May 2007; however, later the Supreme Court had commuted their death sentence to life sentence.

Bhai Jagtar Singh Tara had come under scanner of Indian agencies in November 2014 when he moved to Thailand. Bhai Tara was arrested by the Thailand police in December 2014 and was extradited to India in January 2015.
