Khalsa University Approval Now Under Scrutiny of the Captain

CHANDIGARH, Punjab—The approval given to the Khalsa University by the earlier Punjab government has now come under the scrutiny of the new Chief Minister of Punjab Captain Amarinder Singh. Captain has always opposed the usage of the Khalsa College’s campus for setting up the new Khalsa University and has asked his officials to present the files before him for review.

The Captain has accused the Khalsa College Governing Council of bidding to dilute and subvert the heritage status of the century old Khalsa College.

Referring to the approval of Khalsa University by the Badal led Punjab government as an illogical move, Captain Amarinder Singh has accused the Khalsa College Governing Council’s move as an attempt to mint money and undermine Guru Nanak Dev University situated adjacent to the Khalsa College campus.

It is noteworthy here that Captain Amarinder Singh’s family has had a long association with Khalsa College. His grandfather Maharaja Bhupinder Singh and father Maharaja Yadvinder Singh were its chancellors from 1927 to 1952 and he too remained chancellor from 1972 and 1978.

In July 2016, the Punjab government had given its nod to setting up Khalsa University. It began operating from the college campus a month later. The Khalsa University Bill, 2016, was passed by the Punjab assembly in September, 2016.  Captain Amarinder Singh had then declared that if voted to power, the Congress would scrap the legislation.
