2017 Punjab Elections: Sukhbir Badal Drops Bibi Jagir Kaur

Ex-SGPC President Jagir Kaur

CHANDIGARH, Punjab—On January 2, the ruling Shiromani Akali Dal led by Sukhbir Badal made an announcement of two further candidates for the 2017 assembly polls. The Shiromani Akali Dal (Badal) has dropped its candidate for the Bholath constituency, MLA Jagir Kaur, and has nominated her son-in-law, Yuvraj Bhupinder Singh, who is the husband of his younger daughter.

Ex-SGPC President Bibi Jagir Kaur had been convicted by the CBI Courts under charges of abduction, illegal confinement and forcible abortion in the murder case of her own daughter. She was sentenced to five years imprisonment by the CBI court. Although Jagir Kaur had moved a petition in Punjab & Haryana High Court seeking stay on her conviction but the High Court had dismissed the petition.

The SAD was forced to take this decision as it already had to replace its veteran candidate Sucha Singh Langah from Dera Baba Nanak constituency because he was also convicted for three years in a disproportionate assets case by the session Court of SAS Nagar.

It is learnt that Bibi Jagir Kaur was willing to nominate her younger daughter but the core committee of Shiromani Akali Dal (Badal) preferred her son-in-law who is already the chairman of Zila Parishad of district Kapurthala.

The ruling SAD has also nominated Hari Singh from Dhuri assembly segment who is founding Managing Director of Preet Tractors.
