81-feet Khanda re-installed at Sri Anandpur Sahib

ANANDPUR SAHIB, Punjab—81-feet Khanda was re-installed at the Panj Piara Park of Sri Anandpur Sahib on October 17.  Notably, the Khanda had detached from its foundation on September 22 due to fast speed winds.

The Khanda was initially installed on June 17, 2015 in commemoration of 350th foundation anniversary of Sri Anandpur Sahib. Made of stainless steel, the 18 feet wide Khanda weighs around 3 ton. The Khanda cost Rs. 2.2 million to get finalized at Satnam Fabrication of Moga under surveillance of Sant Baba Karnail Singh Tallewal. The manufacturing process took nearly 3 months.

Despite being architected in a special way to bear air fluctuations, the Khanda was slowly displaced from its foundation. Within a year, its steel base had started bending and on September 22 it got detached from the foundation. The incident led to major embarrassment for Punjab government as despite spending huge sums of money to get the Khanda installed, its foundation couldn’t sustain the weight which in turn also cost around Rs. 2 million.

SGPC member S. Amarjit Singh Chawla along with Manager of Takht Sri Kesgarh Sahib S. Mukhtiar Singh supervised the re-installation of Khanda.
