Gurbani Word Of The Day: asmaan

ਅਸਮਾਨੁ (asmaan)
Meaning: noun: Sky.

Quote:
har jas sunahi na har gun gaavahi. baatan hee asmaan giraavahi.
There are those who neither listen to the Lord’s praises, nor sing the Lord’s attributes, but try to bring down the sky with their talk. – Bhagat Kabir, Guru Granth Sahib, 332

Message: Some people neither sing nor listen to God’s praise (attributes or virtues) but simply claim they can achieve the impossible and want to bring the skies down.

Cautioning us against such people, Bhagat Kabir says that it’s useless to talk to such people who are devoid of any virtue or wisdom. Best is to be careful and keep ourselves away from them.

How do we single out such people from the crowd? Their trivial talk, actions, and unconstructive criticisms point to their self centredness. They believe that only their rigid views should be heard and accepted.

They are arrogant and oblivious to people surrounding them and always consider themselves the smartest. They usually have a point of view which is fixated and rigid however invalid.  Observe and evaluate their behaviour objectively.

On the other hand, Guru-centered people being aware of the ego-centric behaviour are understanding, humble, and always recognize and accept others’ point of view. They show compassion in their actions since their actions are based on good intentions. We should associate ourselves with such people.

Keep away from those who criticize and belittle you and those who are unkind.  They bring their negative spirit to hurt you.  Close the door to their negativity.  Unknown

Etymology: From Persian aasmaan (sky).
