Gurbani Word Of The Day: maagan-haar

ਮਾਗਨਹਾਰ (maagan-haar)
Meaning: noun: One who asks or begs.

Quote:
ਮਮਾ ਮਾਗਨਹਾਰ ਇਆਨਾ॥ ਦੇਨਹਾਰ ਦੇ ਰਹਿਓ ਸੁਜਾਨਾ॥
mamaa maagan-haar iaanaa. den-haar de rahio sujaanaa.
The one who asks is ignorant; the Omniscient Giver is giving (to everyone without asking). – Guru Arjan Sahib, Guru Granth Sahib, 258

Message: As the quest of our minds reaches some enlightenment, the dawn of realisation hits us. We reach closer to our destination, the spiritual awakening in our journey of life. We grow from desiring and asking, drawing up lists of requirements and complaining about unfulfilled demands, to calmer beings. We realise that the Creator knows best. We will receive according to the divine will (hukam), and this ordains our path. We acknowledge that none other than the wise Almighty knows what we require.

This awareness and mindfulness, sets us on the path of harmony with life and the surroundings. The journey of asking and seeking ends with the want of nothing and absolute faith and love for the One. Gratitude and contentment become our prayers, and walking in hukam our way.

Etymology: From Sanskrit maargaṇ (asking; beggar) → Gujarati maagaṇ (beggar) → Awadhi maganiyaar (beggar).

Summary of the Week:
Fulfilling our needs and wants is a lifelong race we partake in. Trust, and turn only to the Divine. No other sources can guide your path better. For, the Divine Parent understands us and is all knowing. We must not shy away from opening up our hearts to Him and trusting His wisdom.

Divine wisdom solidifies our path towards a fulfilling life. Embracing Gurbani heals us from the extensive search of impermanent things. It fills us instead with the warmth of love and faith in the divine presence of our Creator. No longer shall we seek the ephemeral as the Giver blesses us with His glory.

O Lord! With my palms pressed together, I beg for one gift from You, which I can only obtain through Your pleasure: May Nanak adore You with each and every breath and sing Your divine attributes day and night!
– Guru Arjan Sahib, Guru Granth Sahib, 749
