UNION CITY, California, USA—A CCTV capture has been released in attempt to find the vandal who desecrated a Sukhmani Sahib Gutka at Contempo Park in Union City on August 9.
One of the eyewitnesses who was present at the park stated that the vandal spoke Punjabi. “He was definitely of South Asian descent as he spoke Punjabi. He could be Indian, Pakistani or even Bangladeshi. It was hard to tell from his face,” said the eyewitness. Other eye-witnesses have confirmed that the vandal ripped the Gurbani gutka twice before running away.
The gutka was torn around 7 PM on Tuesday morning. “We didn’t quite understand what the person was trying to convey to us. He pointed at us with some gestures, but we didn’t realize that he was holding a gutka until he walked more closer towards us,” said an eyewitness. “Finally when we realized what had happened, all of us got up and ran behind the vandal, however, he ran away in his car which was parked close by.”
The Union City police is investigating the matter. Following the incident, members of the Fremont Gurdwara Sahib and local Sikh leaders have condemned the incident and asked the police department for thorough investigations.
