TORONTO, Canada—Harbaljit Singh Kahlon, NDP party candidate in Canada has weighed in regarding the current ongoing unrest in Punjab due to the heavy handed tactics of government and police officels against peacefully protesting Sikhs .
“My heart aches for Punjab today. When peaceful protests are subject to state aggression resulting in the death of civilians, as leaders we must speak.
“New Democrats are concerned about the escalating tensions in Punjab, where reports have indicated that peaceful protesters have been shot and killed by security forces.
“The Punjabi-Canadian community has expressed alarm that paramilitary forces have now entered the state.
“Many are also worried about reported irregularities in the application of law, and escalating tensions that could further disturb the peace.
“I stand with all New Democrats, in urging the Government of Canada to immediately call for a peaceful resolution to the situation.”
His heartfelt statement reflects the sentiment of Sikhs worldwide, who have expressed shock and outrage at the excessive use of force.
Sikhs had then risen up in fury at the police attacks and fought back, resulting in disturbing scenes of violence, which has now seen an unconfirmed 6 deaths and confirmed injuries to hundreds of praying Sikhs.
