LUDHIANA, Punjab—Bapu Surat Singh is on hunger strike seeking the release of Sikh political prisoners who have completed their legal jail term.
A few days ago he was forcibly picked up from his residence in the village of Hasanpur near Ludhiana by a large number of policemen and is currently being held at the Ludhiana Civil Hospital. He is refusing to take medication even though his health remains critical and he is committed to the cause.
Various Sikh organisations and leading figures have visited Bapu Surat Singh. Bagicha Singh Waraich was present on behalf of Sikh Relief. Sikhs worldwide have demanded the government address the issue rather than forcibly detain or force-feed him in hospital. Meanwhile the police are harassing and attempting to blackmail his family.
