NEW DELHI—A year after a statement by Justice Markande Katju, Prof. Davinderpal Singh Bhullar continues to face illegal detention at the Tihar Jail.

Former Supreme Court judge, Justice Markande Katju had stated last year that Prof. Bhullar should be released on grounds of sympathy.  He made the statement on a special visit to Sri Harmandir Sahib exactly one year ago.  Justice Katju had stated that the death sentence faced by Prof. Bhullar should be commuted and negotiated over the legal point of view of his case which stands against the death sentence.

He mentioned that the case has certain flaws and Prof. Bhullar has already been jailed for more than 22 years.  In addition, his mental condition is not well at present.  Justice Katju had stated that, “In this situation, his capital punishment should be commuted and he should be released on grounds of human sympathy.”

Justice Markandey Katju is the former Chairman, Press Council of India. Prior to his appointment as Chairman, Press Council of India, he was a Judge at the Supreme Court of India.  Before being elevated as a judge to Supreme Court, he had earlier served as the Chief Justice of Delhi High Court, Madras High Court and as acting Chief Justice of Allahabad High Court.
