SGPC Writes to Prime Minister Modi Again for the Release of Sikh Prisoners

2014-06-10-Makkar450xAMRITSAR SAHIB, Punjab—SGPC president Avtar Singh Makkar has shot off another missive to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the immediate release of Sikh detainees who are languishing in different jails of the country even though they have served their jail term.

Makkar said the government had not responded to his repeated pleas. He said it was a serious issue that needed to be addressed urgently. He has also sent a copy of his letter to Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh.

The SGPC move came after Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Gurbachan Singh wrote to Makkar, directing him to intensify efforts for the release of Sikh detainees as well as seeking an amendment to Article 25 (b) of the Constitution which clubs Sikhs with Hindus. The Jathedar is apparently concerned over the deteriorating health of former militant Bhai Gurbaksh Singh Khalsa, who has been on a fast for the last over 40 days at Gurdwara Lakhnaur Sahib in Ambala.

Gurbaksh Singh’s aide Gurpreet Singh admitted that his health was deteriorating as he had been on a fast for the last 43 days. He said Khalsa had lost 18 kg. “Though politicians make statements in the media everyday, they have not approached us,” he added.

  1. Dear Editor,
It is clear that you wish to give prominence to SGPC’s effort after such a long time. Please do not write that Bhai Gurbaksh Singh is a MILITANT.
Every one knows that the PUNJAB Gurdwaras were bared for giving a place to restart this fast again by Sardar Gurbaksh Singh.
Mr. Makkar has only written this letter on Jathdars’s instuction.
Let us hope that they keep the pressure up and give a local Media
    coverage on Article 25[b].

    Mr
