‘Sant Samaj’ Sought Replacement of Nanakshahi Calendar to Bikrami Calendar

Giani Gurbachan SinghAMRITSAR SAHIB, Punjab—Submitting a memorandum to Sri Akal Takht Sahib appointed Jathedar Giani Gurbachan Singh, ‘Gurmat Sidhant Parcharak Sant Samaj’ has demanded that ‘traditional’ Bikrami Calendar be re-implemented, rejecting the Nanakshahi Calendar. On the other hand, in a letter to Akal Takht Sahib, Panthik Talmel Dal has demanded that the original Nanakshahi Calendar be restored.

Talking to media persons, Giani Gurbachan Singh told that Sant Samaj leaders including Giani Harnam Singh Dhumma, Baba Sukhchain Singh Dharampura, Baba Balbir Singh chief Budha Dal, Baba Baljinder Singh Rara Sahib and heads of some other Sikh sects, had handed over a memorandum saying that the original Nanakshahi Calendar, which was implemented in 2003, is creating a dilemma in Sikh nation. In view of this, the Bikrami Calendar which is being followed since the period of the Gurus, should be restored and Nanakshahi Calendar should be rejected.

He said the decision would be taken in a meeting of Panj Singh Sahiban (highest presidium of Sikhs).

On being asked about the involvement of Takht Sri Damdama Sahib Jathedar Giani Balwant Singh Nandgarh who takes a firm stand in favour of the original Nanakshahi Calendar, Akal Takht Jathedar said Jathedars of all takhts would participate in the meeting.

Making a comment on the film of Sirsa based controversial cult chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim, he said he had asked Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee to watch the movie through its means and in case of any objectionable scene in it, a ban on it should be demanded.
