SGPC Honours Brother of Satwant Singh at Harmandir Sahib

AMRITSAR SAHIB, Punjab—Even though people from all over India paid their respects to the former Prime Minister of India Indira Gandhi on her death anniversary, the SGPC chose to honor one of Gandhi’s assassin’s brothers at the holiest shrine for the Sikhs, Siri Harmandir Sahib (the Golden Temple).

The SGPC honored Waryam Singh, the brother of freedom fighter/assassin Satwant Singh with a siropa and a sword at Siri Harmandir Sahib. On October 31, 1984, Indira Gandhi’s bodyguards Satwant Singh and Beant Singh shot her in retribution for the bloody attack on Harmandir Sahib that killed thousands.

Many gathered for the presentation to honor Waryam Singh, such as SGPC member Manjit Singh, Mokhan Singh of the DDT, AISSF president Karnail Singh Peer, and Panthik leader Baldev Singh Sirsa.

Honoring Waryam Singh to some was a controversial decision as some, including the Congress, condemned the act. “It ill behaves the SGPC to bestow such an honor (on an assassin’s kin) and that too at the Golden Temple complex,” said District Congress Committee president Gurjeet Singh Aujla.
