Sikh Convention Passes Resolution for UN Investigation of June 1984 Holocaust

Sikh conventionCHANDIGARH, Punjab—Sikh political leaders, intellectuals, and human rights activists, on Sunday, June 1, 2014, called a convention to mark the 30th anniversary of the June 1984 Sikh holocaust. The convention passed a resolution demanding a probe by the United Nations Organization (UNO) into the circumstances leading to the massacre of hundreds of innocent pilgrims at the holiest Sikh shrine in 1984.

The participants asserted that the sensitive issue could not be settled down without adequate justice, alleging, “The failure of the government to hold credible inquiries into the episode for three decades to bring the guilty to book, speak volumes about the injustice to the community.”

“The question remains unanswered as to why 42 Gurdwaras were attacked when only one at Sri Amritsar was allegedly in “occupation” of armed Sikhs”, they said, adding the state accomplished its brief military aim in getting rid of the armed “occupants” led by Sant Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale from Sri Darbar Sahib Complex in less than a week, but what transpired after the deadly evasion elsewhere in Punjab was totally overlooked.

The convention was addressed by Justice Ajit Singh Bains (retd), Inderjeet Singh Jeji, Ashok Singh Bagria, historian Ajmer Singh, Satnam Singh Ponta Sahib from Dal Khalsa, Rajinder Singh from Khalsa Panchayat, Karamjit Singh veteran journalist, and Bhai Daljit Singh Bittu leader of Akali Dal (Panch Pardhani).
