Over 100,000 GTA Sikhs Expected to Celebrate Khalsa Day on May 4 2014 in Malton, Canada

MISSISAUGA, ON, Canada—The Ontario Gurdwaras Committee estimates over 100,000 will join in the Khalsa Day celebrations on Sunday, May 4th. The Khalsa Day parade, celebrating Khalsa Sajna Divas led by “Sri Guru Granth Sahib ji”, departs from Sri Guru Singh Sabha Malton Gurdwara (7280 Airport Road) Malton at 1:00 p.m. and reaches the Rexdale Sikh Spiritual Centre Gurdwara (9 Carrier Drive) at 6:00 p.m.

The Ontario Gurdwaras Committee would like to ask all participants to please refrain from parking in unapproved driveways or private lots.  The OGC also asks all participants to refrain from walking on grass or littering. 

Special Honourees

The Program will also include several people honoured for panthik, academic as well as athletic achievements.

First and foremost due to the fact that it has been thirty years since the Indian Government invaded and desecrated the Sri Harmandar Sahib complex this year’s Khalsa Day parade will be dedicated to those who sacrificed their lives for the Sikh Faith.  The families of Sant Jarnail Singh ji Khalsa Bhindranwale, Shaheed Bhai Beant Singh and Shaheed Bhai Satwant Singh will all be honoured.  Shaheed Bhai Beant Singh and Shaheed Bibi Bimal Kaur’s youngest child, Jaswinder Singh has travelled from Australia to mark the occasion.

Shromani Kavishri Joga Singh Jogi will also be attending and will be presented with a Gold Medal by the Ontario Gurdwaras Committee for his service to the Sikh Nation.

The Outstanding Contribution to Sikhism in Ontario award will be presented to Bramalea-Gore-Malton Member of Provincial Parliament Jagmeet Singh.  Jagmeet Singh has worked on various Sikh issues over the past 3 year. Most recently spearheaded the campaign to get April declared as Sikh Heritage Month in Ontario.  Passed bill recognizing Sikh Articles of  Faith in courtrooms and other government buildings.

Outstanding Contribution to Sikhism by a non-Sikh will be awarded to the Government of Pakistan through the Consulate General of Pakistan in Toronto.  This award is in honour of the Government of Pakistan giving Holy City status to Sri Nanakana Sahib in 2012 and Sri Panja Sahib in 2013.

The Humanitarian Award will be presented to Mani Singh for taking three months off of work and selflessly serving those who were impacted by Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines.  

Academic Awards will be presented to Simran Kaur Dhunna for graduating with a high school average of 99.7%.  Also University of Toronto – Mississauga Principal Hargurdeep Singh Saini as well as Khalsa School Malton directors Dr. Sarvjit Singh Soni and Mrs. Surinder Kaur Soni will also be honoured for having Khalsa School Malton rank in the top ten schools in Ontario.

Athletic awards will be presented to Arjan S. Sahota and Sarabnoor S. Lally for winning Canadian National Cadet Gold medals in wrestling, Bikramjit S. Gill and Manvinder S. Sahota for attending NCAA schools for basketball and Rajvir Singh Kahlon for signing a NCAA division one soccer scholarship.
