AMRITSAR SAHIB— Sri Akal Takht Sahib’s appointed Jathedar Giani Gurbachan Singh, today, pronounced a “Tankhah” (religious punishment) to Bikram Majithia for committing grave sacrilege against the scriptures of Sri Gobind Singh Ji.

He directed Majithia to perform service in the Langar—financially and physically—at all five Takhts of Sikhs, to hold Sri Akhand Path Sahib at Sri Akal Takht Sahib, to clean utensils in the Langar Hall and to listen to Gurbani. In addition, Majithia has been ordered to give a donation of Rs. 501 and provide sacramental Krah-Parshad worth Rs. 101 to Sikh congregations. Also, Majithia has been asked to hold an Ardas for forgiveness before Guru Granth Sahib.

It may be recalled that Majithia had distorted the sacred Shabad of Guru Gobind Singh and committed blasphemy by fitting the name of Hindutavi politician Arun Jaitley in it. Majithia committed the offence in an election meeting conducted by him in support of Jaitley that left Sikh sentiments injured deeply. Sikhs across the world demanded strict action against him.

Following the outrage, Majithia tendered an apology before Sri Akal Takht Sahib. However, Jathedar Giani Gurbachan Singh took a soft view on Majithia which was opposed by many Sikhs who demanded immediate excommunication.
