Police Disturbing Family Members and Friends Unnecessarily: SOPW

sopwAMRITSAR SAHIB—The Sikh Organization for Prisoner Welfare has expressed concerns about investigations by NIA, India’s counter terrorism agency.  SOPW’s Operations in India have been investigated twice already this year.  The organization claimed that “a large NIA team including an SP, DSP, Inspectors and Punjab Police made house enquiries at our senior SOPW members homes and called other team members to their offices for further interviews.”

During the first investigation, police confiscated laptops, documents and other materials belonging to the SOPW.  However, later it was acknowledged that SOPW work is legal and not questionable.

Despite the first investigation being fully positive, the SOPW has stated its team members in Punjab and other parts of India face such humiliation from time to time.  These type of investigations break the morale of the team and helps to instil fear in them.

SOPW has claimed that this time, the investigation body has not only questioned its staff, but also disturbed their family and friends.  SOPW claimed that the fact that it deals with cases which require privacy and continued investigations only helps to make matters worse.  SOPW has stated that it will take necessary actions to stop this humiliation in future.
