AMRITSAR SAHIB—Bandi Chhor Divas was observed at Sri Harmandir Sahib in Amritsar.  Sikh Sangat in large numbers was present to take part in the programs.  The celebrations take place every year however this year, the programs remembered the victims of 1984 Sikh genocide along with the blessings of Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji.

Bandi Chhor Divas this year holds a special significance to the Sikhs as it falls on the anniversary of 1984 Sikh Genocide in which thousands of Sikhs, including women and children, were brutally murdered and raped by mobs.  Various Government leaders took part in organizing the pogroms of Sikhs throughout India.  The culprits to this day roam freely and enjoy high ranks in the Government.

Along with observing Bandi Chhor Divas and remembering the genocide victims, Sikhs are praying for the release of various political and other prisoners wrongfully detained throughout jails in India.  India has continued to oppress the Sikh community by illegal and unlawful detainments.  Post 1984 attack on Akal Takht Sahib and Harmandir Sahib, Sikhs in large numbers were abducted by Police without warrants.  These Sikhs continue to be barred without reason or trial.
