Op/Ed: Delhi Rapists Received Death Penalty – Is it Really Justice?

Today the culprits in the Delhi rape case received capital punishment, but those responsible for the rapes of thousands in New Delhi, Punjab, Kashmir and Gujrat from Congress & BJP governments still reign as ministers. The rule of law should not be just used for media spin in occasional cases, but applied to everyone. Current congress ministers are just as guilty as those sentenced today. The sentences today are superficial until the likes of Prof Bhullar are released and Sajjan Kumar are arrested.

The case started last December when the victim, a 23-year-old physiotherapy student, had gone to see a movie with a male friend at a New Delhi mall. During their journey home, they boarded a bus at a major intersection in upmarket South Delhi. The driver and at least five other men on the bus were drunk and looking for a “joy ride,” police said.

The men, from a poverty-ridden slum on the outskirts of Delhi, dragged the woman to the back of the bus and beat up her male friend. Police said the men took turns raping the woman, using an iron rod to violate her as the bus drove around the city for almost an hour. When they had finished, they dumped the two victims by the side of the road. The woman’s injuries were so severe that some internal organs had to be removed. She died two weeks later at a hospital in Singapore.

After global outrage and protests, the four men were investigated, tried and convicted. Today they were sentenced to death.

As appalling as this singular rape case is—it pales in comparison to the thousands of rapes and murders of Sikhs by mobs across India in 1984. After the execution of Genocidal mastermind, Indira Gandhi, her family, friends, and her Congress Party called for bloody and organized revenge. Led by Congress leaders such as Sajjan Kumar, Jagdish Tytler and even movie stars like Amitabh Bachchan, mobs raped Sikh women, burned their husbands and sons alive and looted their homes and businesses.

This continued genocide against Sikhs has received no justice—even after nearly a dozen commissions and investigations, not a single instigator has been charged almost 30 years later.

Justice Delayed is Justice Denied

The world was outraged by this single rape case, but where is the outrage for the tens of thousands of Sikhs victimized by genocidal mobs? Is it true justice for this young girl when India continued to deny justice to an entire race on a daily basis? The rule of law applies selectively in India and, in these cases, only when politically expedient to do so. While these criminals deserve the punishment awarded them, hundreds of others roam free, contaminating the false “justice” system with the very fact that they have lived free lives for decades, even after their deplorable acts.

Until India investigates and charges the criminals behind the rapes of thousands of Sikh women and the murders of their husbands, sons, fathers and brothers, there is no justice and it will continue to be a corrupt nation, run by criminals.

  1. I think it’s important to commend justice for at least this one case. As gruesome were the crimes against sikhs, it won’t be fair to “Damini” to say that this justice will be “pale” when compared to thousands of rapes against sikh women.
Good thing that came out of this is the power of media. “Damini’s” photo was everywhere on Fb, shared even by non-Indians. Until we can do that with ourselves, it would be hard to get justice. Sikh24 is a great media platform, we need to more of these sorts and all over the faces of Indian government. My two cents, what they are worth.
